Check it out here, Peace, Love, and StitchingDaniellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10264011735420763054noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7508512010394272477.post-25825051597596756382012-11-25T14:37:00.001-08:002012-11-27T07:00:38.474-08:00New StartI have had a bit of startitis lately. I started the Samsarah ornament from the JCS 2007 ornament preview issue on Weeks Dye Works 30 count Cocoa linen and my own threads, GAST Cranberry, Mulberry, and Crescent Colours Bamboo, Weeping Willow, and Black Coffee. I have buttons on order for this ornament as well, two stars and a red cardinal.

I have learned I really do not like working with Weeks Dye Works threads. They just seem to lay differently than other threads.

I have also learned to like Weeks Dye Works 30 count linen. I used to feel the weave was too loose, but after putting a piece in a Q-snap, that seems to be the trick, keeping the fabric as taut as possible. Such gorgeous colors in this fabric!

Until next time...

First up is stash purchases. I purchased these two boxes at AC Moore not too long ago, one to hold my scrapbooking supplies and one for cross stitch fabric. I love them both and they were both about $10 each.

Next up, stitching! I started working on Glory Bee's ornament from the 2003 JCS ornament issue. I am using all different threads and fabric than listed in the pattern. When I post a pic of the finished product I will list the fabric and floss I used.

And, finally, family pics. I was over my mother's Sunday evening for the Pittsburgh Steelers v. Baltimore Ravens game, and my sister was donning her usual silliness.

Yes, that is a ninja vest on from her Halloween costume and she has a lacrosse stick stuck in the back of it!!! LOL.

This is actually a pair of 3-D glasses and the thing she is holding shines pictures of fireworks on the wall, and the glasses make them look 3-D. It was really cool!!!

And this one we laughed forever about. Those things on her eyes are sticky eyeballs that will crawl down a wall. The things people come up with!!

And other little tidbits, I am reading The Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian. A creepy and disturbing book. I love it!! I only have about 40 pages to go, so I will finish tonight. If you would like to be my friend on Goodreads, go here.

And have any of you seen the preview for the movie The Sessions, starring Helen Hunt? It is about a guy that has been in an iron lung for most of his life due to polio he had as a kid, and he wants to lose his virginity, so he hires a sex therapist, Helen Hunt. The movie looks funny and touching. Definitely a must see!!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Today I will be watching my favorite Thanksgiving movie, Home For The Holidays, and of course A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving!!

Does anyone know the first year the previous ornament issues started?

I am pretty sure the first ever ornament issue was 1997, but someone please correct me if I am wrong.

And here is my progress on the SamSarah Perpetual Calendar. The first leaflet is for January. I work on this every evening for about half an hour or so. At this rate I will be finished the whole thing, oh, say, in 2016!!!

I have to say stitching with white thread has always been a pain. It just does not seem to lay as nicely as other color threads. Maybe it is just me.

Until next time... Daniellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10264011735420763054noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7508512010394272477.post-79044878259384002622012-11-14T14:11:00.002-08:002012-11-14T14:11:43.217-08:00Random Tidbits- I love the Overdrive app on my iPad. I decided a little while ago to stop buying books for my Kindle app and instead utilize the free books from my library on my Overdrive app. What a joy it has been! I have not bought a book in over a month now. Instead, I have directed that money to stash. LOL. One step at a time here. I am trying to curtail my stash buying also, but we all know how that goes. Between the Samsarah Perpetual Calendar and the CCN Santa's Village I am technically set for the year, but I have decided I want to start the CCN cottages from this year over on perforated paper. I found a set of scrapbooking paper that features each month, and they would just look perfect on it!!! Yes, I am insane. LOL.

- I know I flit back and forth a lot between stitching on fabric and stitching on perforated paper, and stitching in general, it seems. I really have come to the conclusion of how much I LOVE stitching on the paper. The Lizzie Kate 6 Fat Snowmen? I restarted on Antique Brown perforated paper. And I found a wonderful piece of scrapbooking paper to put them on. I am going to stitch each piece of the border and each chart individually and cut them all out and arrange them on the page, or two, as I am pretty sure they will all not fit on one piece. Stay tuned for pics!

- I have started on my Samsarah Perpetual Calendar...finally!! I don't have too much done, but some is better than nothing.

- Still waiting for my lilac Walker bag. I will post a pic. I should receive it in a few days. Daniellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10264011735420763054noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7508512010394272477.post-23562399601352007652012-11-12T13:00:00.000-08:002012-11-13T11:38:20.536-08:00Back from the retreat! This past weekend I attended a needlework retreat in Laurel, Maryland sponsored by Michelle Ink Designs, The Hang-Up, and In Stitches in Alexandria, Virginia. This year I was attending alone, as Jill was not able to go, but within minutes of me arriving and signing in and sitting at a table alone I was "adopted" by the most wonderful, generous, and hilarious group of women!

Day 1:

- I arrived at the retreat about 2:30 p.m., signed in, and began stitching. The stitching lounge was open until 11:00 p.m. that night. We had a wonderful dinner of three kinds of chili, bread, and all kinds of snacks. I started to learn more about the women who adopted me, and we talked until the lounge closed for the night.

This was my first night in a hotel room by myself! Verdict...awesome!!! Once, of course, I figured out how to close the curtains so it was not lit up like the 4th of July all night, which I did not figure out until the NEXT morning! So, not a good night's sleep the first night. I was up until about 2am and awake at 7am.

Day 2

The lounge opened at 7am. Today was also the day I was going to see the needlework show at the Montpelier mansion. And Jill was coming up for the day to attend the show and stitch. Made a trip to Starbucks for a Caffe Mocha, and then back to the hotel for breakfast and more stitching. The retreat hosts had a boutique set up and each time I walked in I saw the wonderful Lizzie Kate 6 Fat Men and Snow Belles all stitched up, with everything there ready to purchase, patterns, fabric, and thread. I did not cave...yet!

Jill arrived at 11:30 and as a group we all went to the mansion for the needlework show and then Jill and I went to lunch ourselves at Don Pablo's. Wonderful food!!!! Jill stayed the rest of the day, until 10pm, and we stitched and talked and laughed. I went up to my room soon after and was only awake until midnight.

Day 3

This was the last day and we had to be out of our rooms by noon, and the stitching lounge was open from 8am to 4pm. I was out of bed, packed and ready by 8:30 a.m. After another trip to Starbucks I went to the stitching lounge and decided to splurge and get the entire kit for the 6 Fat Men, and I managed to get the word "snowmen" stitched by the time the retreat ended. We all went to Einstein Bagels for lunch and then stitched and all went our separate ways.

The weekend ended much too quickly! I so look forward to next year's retreat already!

Here are some pics I took.
I had not seen Jill since July, so it was very nice to visit in person. I am so very thankful for meeting Jill in person over a year ago and developing a friendship over this time. The stitching world can be a very lonely place without someone to share it with who gets everything you are saying! And on the way out I found a $10 bill in the parking lot!!! Yeahhhhhh....
I bought some threads I needed and these two patterns, a Lizzie Kate and a Little House Needleworks ornament.
I want to start going to my thread stash first instead of always just buying the called-for threads. But then I worry about it not looking right. Yes, I think I need to stop worrying so much about this fabulous hobby of ours and just go with it.

So, what do you do? And what is your process?

I started Thankful Quaker this morning. Stay tuned for a pic!

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad
Daniellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10264011735420763054noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7508512010394272477.post-68083484498031101392012-11-02T12:50:00.001-07:002012-11-02T12:50:11.899-07:00He's A Turkey Finish!I finished He's A Turkey today. I changed two of the feather colors. The pattern initially called for one in the orange color, one in the yellow color, one in the darker brown, and then two in the lighter brown. I decided to make one red and one a different brown/tan color.
Until next time...Daniellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10264011735420763054noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7508512010394272477.post-74408115552279462412012-11-01T12:23:00.003-07:002012-11-01T12:23:27.372-07:00TornI am torn...torn between whether to frame my stitching projects or put them in a scrapbook. For He's A Turkey I have a simple black frame or I want to use this sort of layout in a scrapbook.

Do I go simple with the frame?

Or do I start my scrapbook up again? I like the idea of a scrapbook because I will never run out of room for projects, and I can also be creative with the pages. You can fit many, many pages in a scrapbook. Plus I can take it along for show and tell to retreats or family gatherings, whatever.

Your thoughts????Daniellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10264011735420763054noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7508512010394272477.post-52591187933372675352012-11-01T10:55:00.001-07:002012-11-01T10:56:00.654-07:00Halloween...the day afterWell, another Halloween has come and gone. We always get a ton of trick-or-treaters, and yesterday was no exception. We went through two bowls of candy! Our dogs bark furiously when someone comes to the door, so we always sit at the end of our driveway to hand out candy. Last night was a bit chilly so we brought our fire pit around from the back deck and had a nice fire while giving out candy.

My favorite part of the evening is always when my mom and stepfather bring my sister to come over trick-or-treating. She is 7, so still at the age where Halloween is exciting. She was a mummy this year. I borrowed her mask and had BF take a pic. LOL.

I am still stitching away on He's A Turkey. I started on the feathers yesterday and the feather looked a bit stripey with the overdyed floss. So, I ripped it out and stitched it again, this time going in a circular pattern with the floss. Here is the first time:

And here is after ripping out the stitches and doing it again:

Although it is not totally over yet, the worst seems to be. We only lost power and Internet service for half an hour. Truly a miracle in my neck of the woods. I have been holding down the fort, however, as BF is working 16-hour days this week because of the weather. I worked all weekend to get as much stuff finished and turned in as I could, anticipating that I would be without power or Internet.

So, I was able to get some stitching done yesterday. Brittercup Designs What A Turkey on white perforated paper and using the called-for specialty threads, using three strands of floss. The coverage is so much better than just two threads. I love these designs and hope to stitch all 12 of them and put them in my scrapbook in the same method Monique has made her scrapbook.
Over the weekend we took a trip to Summers Farm in Frederick. What a great place! A corn maze, animals, a pumpkin patch, food, drink, etc. $10 a person to get in. They also had a bunch of these set up, where you can put your face in the scene. I especially like BF's daughter as the little kid. She is 13 and about 5'8," so anything but little!
I love the ease of it, I can take it anywhere, stitch anywhere with it without a scroll rod, stand, Q-snap. And it is easy to put in a scrapbook, which I am reviving.

I purchased this scrapbook the other day at AC Moore for a mere $3.99, which I thought was awesome. And I already had this rack in my office to hold it. Just lovely!
I also have purchased the kit for the Samsarah Perpetual Calendar. This is right up my alley. Now if I can just stitch all of it!! This is the first leaflet. You can read all about the calendar here. I originally had my snow globe collection on this shelf, but moved those to put the calendar stand here.
I get up early, work late, and by the time I have dinner it is almost bedtime. So, I decided last night that I would start stitching for one hour in the morning before doing anything else. Today was the first day of doing that. That hour flew by!

I started Plum Street Samplers Halloween Hornbook, a pattern I have wanted to stitch ever since it came out. I started right in the middle of the pattern. It looks sort of like an alien at this point, don't you think? LOL.

I am using the called-for Belle Soie silks and Light Gray 28 count Jobelan. Jobelan is my absolute favorite fabric to stitch on, hands down.

This one is very cute and our small dog resembles one of these "weenies."

I am using the called-for threads and 32 count Lambswool Jobelan. Any tips for stitching with dark threads on light fabric? I use a laying tool and that helps, but I can still see some fabric peeking through. Or do you just not worry about it?

I also started Brooke's Books Publishing October Cake, one of their freebies on the Yahoo group. I have wanted to stitch these cakes forever.

I am using the called-for threads and 32 count Sage Jobelan.
One day it's cross stitch, then it's needlepoint, then it's back to cross stitch, but, oh, wait, now it's needlepoint. And I stopped the other day and pondered as to why this is so. So many of you seem very grounded in either cross stitch or needlepoint and actually stick to a project and finish it.

And I have to say the constant back and forth in my brain is not what I want my hobby to be. I have been doing needlepoint for a while, but am missing the ease of cross stitch. What I really want is fabulous projects on my walls or in my scrapbook and to be happy about the choice of project, fabric/canvas, threads, all of it. Is this asking too much? I feel very schizophrenic with this hobby of mine most days.

Do I use Q-snaps, stretcher bars? Plain old DMC, overdyed threads, the multitude of items that are out there? It truly is mind boggling when you think about it.

So, this morning I saw a post on Facebook from Down Sunshine Lane about the free pattern from Kit & Bixby available on the Hoffman Distributing site for Halloween and I decided to go look at it. I took a break from work and went to AC Moore and bought the DMC floss called for and some plain white Aida. YES, Aida!

I have also flitted back and forth many, many times between Jobelan, Jubilee, linen, 28 count linen, 32 count linen, 40 count linen. You name it, I have tried it. I sometimes think I am looking for perfection here. Like pieces of a puzzle fitting into place. It's like I don't want to think too much about it all, just make beautiful things.

So, I have done about nine stitches and am liking it so far. Believe it or not I put the Aida on stretcher bars. The mini stretcher bars are so much lighter than Q-snaps, and I can put the whole thing on my Needlework 4 stand if I want to. I am using three strands on the 14 count Aida, as it seems to give good coverage, as I am using black DMC at the moment.

But do any of you feel this craziness I do on a seemingly daily basis? Do any of you still stitch on Aida? I feel as though I am going back to the basics. Simple. At the beginning of every year I say this will be the year. I will fill my walls, fill my scrapbook, complete more than two projects, and it does not seem to happen.

And I know many of you may say you just need to relax, have fun with the hobby. Well, my craziness has cost me more money in fabric, patterns, projects than I would care to admit to anyone. I guess I am just looking to see that I am not alone in this madness, and that there is hope for me yet to calm it down.

So, give me your thoughts, insights, experiences. No holds barred, people. I am looking for the outrageous, the outlandish, things you never thought you would tell anyone you have done or thought about this hobby of ours, this wonderful thing that comes out of fabric and thread and a needle. So, lay it on me.

P.S. Not related to cross stitch at all, but I watched the most disturbing movie the other night, Chained. I was physically sick to my stomach at the beginning, and then it was like watching a car accident. I couldn't look away. Have any of you seen this movie?? Not for the faint of heart. Since I did not received the hoped-for supplies for LHN's Old Nantucket and CCN's Cookies & Milk on Saturday I am going to venture out to AC Moore today and get supplies to start Ursula Michael's Winter Snow Day from this issue. It should be a fairly quick stitch.
And something non-stitching related. Today is the first day since my surgery that I have felt semi-normal, so yay for that, but for any of you cat owners out there, Tidy Cats Breeze litter system is the BEST system for litter box control that I have found. You can read all about it here. It took a week of transition for my cat to use it, but it worked!! This system truly is a breeze! LOL
